Marvin Mudrick taught literature at the University of California at Santa Barbara from 1949 until his death in 1986. In the early 1980s several students of his made tape-recordings of some of his classes and talks, and this book contains transcripts of those tapes. Among the occasions tape-recorded are a class on eighteenth-century English prose, a talk on literary criticism, two interviews about the College of Creative Studies at UCSB, a talk about his upbringing, a talk on artistic response, a talk on geniuses, and a talk on teaching.
